SUMMARY:BRM Evening
DESCRIPTION:The BRM V16 was a remarkably daring and futuristic enterpr
ise when former ERA principals Raymond Mays and Peter Berthon first fl
oated the notion in 1945. The idea of a cooperative British motor indu
stry project to build a world-beating Grand Prix racing car was embrac
ed by only the most imaginative minds, but imagination and stark econo
mic reality would collide through 1946-1950. By the time this stupendo
usly-specified projectile emerged in the metal, initial under-funding
and postwar inflation left the Bourne-based team to develop the design
on a shoe-string. Ultimately it had to be saved by a benefactor, whic
h is where Alfred Owen of the Owen Organisation came to the rescue. Un
der his aegis the BRM V16 became a regular front-runner - but too late
for the Grand Prix Formula to which it had been built. So where shoul
d the project stand within motor racing history?\nTonight, Doug Nye wi
ll explore the V16's true significance, and its landmark role not only
in the story of British motor sporting aspiration, but also as part o
f this nation's postwar social fabric.\nTickets for the BRM Preservati
