What ever is old is new again.
If you live long enough you are destined to revisit your past whether you want to or not. Bobbers are a style of motorcycles attributed to the hooligan gangs of the late 30's and through the 60's. The term of bobber is generally attributed to the the practice of cutting off any thing that is not essential and cutting the fenders down to the absolute minimum. Personally I believe the term comes from the minimalist hair cut female flappers from the 20's wore. What ever the origin, the style propagated from necessity. The search for performance and individualism led many to strip down the bikes to nothing, light weight means better performance. That, leads to be creative in achieving a personal style. The cut of the fender, the rolling of bead on what is left of the metal to make it stiff enough to holds its shape. It was the black smiths that were the early pioneers in creating something from nothing, after all they were charged of keeping all things of metal and machinery working in a world of with no standards.
It has become difficult and expensive to find old Harleys Triumphs or Nortons. Even some of the Japanese bikes from the 60's and 70's are getting hard to find. So I was intrigued when I came across these relatively new Honda Yamaha and Suzuki bobber variants. The world changes and black smiths and fabricators are not skills being passed down much these days. Some entrepreneurs saw a market for do it your selves that want to create their own bobber with minimum fabrication. I googled “Motorcycle Bobbers” and there are many mail order companies filling the need. So if you have more cash than ability and a motorcycle from the 1990's to present you too can have a custom bobber!
