The Prestolite tank on the side of the Mercer is for acetylene to burn in the headlights. This is why this era is called " gas & brass ".. Thanks for the tour of amazing, early, race cars!!!!

The mechanic would always be seated next to the driver to help keep an eye on oil flow and fuel pressure.
